Hethersett Primary & Nursery School
The Challenge
As part of a £8 million development project to create a new 420-place primary school and standalone nursery, we collaborated with NPS Property Consultants during the design stages and Morgan Sindall Construction during the build. The project was part of Norfolk County Council’s initiative to expand school capacity in growing communities.
Given the range of ages at the school, washroom facilities had to be designed for different stages of development, from the youngest nursery students to older primary school children. The challenge was to provide solutions that met the varying needs of different age groups, ensuring functionality, privacy, and a welcoming environment.
The Solution
To address the needs of each age group, we specified different washroom solutions tailored to their requirements:
- For Nursery and Reception students, we chose Kinder SGL Cubicles in vibrant colours to create an attractive and engaging environment. Nursery Wash Trough Vanity Units were installed at low levels to encourage easy access and use by younger children. A custom-sized cubicle partition was also included to accommodate baby change units for younger children and babies.
- Key Stage 2 (Early Years) washrooms were equipped with Junior Toilet Cubicles featuring curved doors and divisions for effective supervision. The cubicles’ height pilasters and headrails offered more privacy and security as the children matured.
- For older Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) students, we adapted our Challenger Range, retaining the curved doors and divisions design but increasing the cubicle height for additional privacy and security.
The Outcome
The washroom facilities at the new primary school now cater to the diverse needs of all students, from nursery age to the older primary school years. The different cubicle solutions ensure the younger children have attractive, accessible facilities, while the older students benefit from enhanced privacy and a sense of responsibility as they prepare to transition to high school. The thoughtful design of the washrooms contributes to the overall success of the school, supporting both the educational and developmental needs of the students.
