Wensum Junior School
Converting a cloakroom into an inviting open plan washroom space
The Challenge
Wensum Junior School, located in Norwich, is celebrated for its beautifully preserved architecture, considered one of the city’s ‘historic gems’. When it came time to convert an existing cloakroom into a spacious open-plan washroom area, it was essential to preserve the building’s historic charm while creating a modern, functional washroom. The challenge was to achieve a balance between contemporary design and the preservation of the school’s classic architecture, featuring high windows and towering archways.
The Solution
Dunhams was involved in the project from the design stage, working closely with the architect, contractor, and the school board to create a bespoke solution to fit the space. We selected our Challenger Education Cubicle System with Grafix Mondriano feature doors to add a vibrant pop of colour to the new washroom area, contrasting beautifully with the school’s historic surroundings. The bold design of the doors was complemented by subtle block shades from our colour palette, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
For the handwash area, we paired Resilic Wash troughs with SGL Vanity subframes, creating a sleek and modern look. The Resilic Wash troughs are made from FRP (fiberglass-reinforced plastic), offering a lightweight, smooth surface that is both hygienic and resistant to cracks and dirt. The wash troughs were treated with an antibacterial finish, ensuring a clean and protected environment for the students.
The Outcome
The new open-plan washroom at Wensum Junior School successfully blends modern functionality with the school’s historic architecture. The bold colours, sleek wash trough design, and hygienic materials have created a visually appealing and efficient space that enhances the school’s facilities while maintaining its historic charm. The refurbishment not only meets the practical needs of the students but also ensures that the character of the building is preserved for future generations.
