Creating a washroom that is both durable and vandal-resistant requires thoughtful design, materials, and maintenance. Here’s how we approach this challenge:
1. Design for Visibility and Supervision
Open-plan layouts
Position communal hand-wash areas facing external corridors which enhances visibility, making it harder for vandalism to occur undetected.
Doorless or semi-enclosed designs for communal areas further discourage misuse by allowing casual oversight without sacrificing essential privacy.
2. Employ Robust, Anti-Vandal Materials
Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) is our go-to material for cubicles and panels. Its durability and waterproof nature make it ideal for withstanding high use and abuse.
For example our Challenger cubicle system combines SGL panels with reinforced aluminium hardware, including concealed fixings and triple-bolt hinges, ensuring long-term resilience even under heavy daily traffic. This makes it ideal for use in a variety of sectors including industrial settings, schools, retail and shopping centres, and leisure facilities.
3. Design with Purpose: Prevent Misuse at Every Touch Point
At the Inspiration Academy, we installed full-height, anti-vandal cubicles and privacy trims to deter inappropriate use, such as phone misuse in cubicles.
We also provided solid surface handwash troughs, both stylish and vandal-resistant, supporting hygiene and ease of maintenance. What sets them apart is their unique ability to be repaired in case of damage as they can be sanded and polished, removing any scratches and signs of wear and tear.
4. Encourage Ownership Through User Engagement
Involving users in the design process e.g., letting students choose colours, can reduce vandalism by creating a sense of ownership and respect for the space.
5. Implement Thoughtful Material & Fixture Choices
- Vandal-resistant fixtures: stainless steel or reinforced materials for dispensers, taps, and accessories resist damage and graffiti.
- Concealed infrastructure: hiding pipework behind IPS Duct Panels or in locked access panels prevents easy tampering.
- Timed flow or sensor-controlled taps limit flooding and reduce wear.
- Graffiti-resistant finishes: Easy-clean surfaces make maintenance faster and reduce long-term damage.
